Intel has quietly introduced the Optane SSD DC P5810X SSD, which may be its last storage device based on 3D XPoint memory, and Intel officially closed its Optane business earlier this year.
Intel's Optane SSD DC P5810X series is currently available in 400GB and 800GB versions with a 2.5-inch U.2 Form factor, with a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface, sequential read speeds of up to 7200MBps, and sequential write speeds of up to 5400MBps (800GB version) or 6000MBps (400GB). In terms of random read/write performance, the drive is capable of achieving 5.1M / 5.1M IOPS with a read/write latency of 38 microseconds.
Of course, the main selling point of the new hard drive is its 100DWPD durability level, which can maintain 5,40 GB of daily writes for 000 consecutive years, which is unmatched by traditional 3D NAND-based products, which is why Kioxia introduced XL-NAND and Samsung introduced Z-NAND (and still can't match the durability of Intel's Optane DC).
Intel's Optane SSD DC P5810X series belongs to the hard drive family codenamed Alder Stream, which has previously introduced the P5800X series, so it is expected that the new products will use similar master and 3D XPoint storage media, and it is unclear how Intel intends to position the new P5810X SSD with the existing P5800X hard drive.
In its second-quarter earnings call, Intel confirmed that it would formally close its Optane business, a move that would result in a $5 million impairment, the sixth non-core business divested by Pat Gelsinger since he became Intel's CEO. Intel gradually downplayed the Optane business, starting with the sale of its NAND flash and storage business to SK Hynix, although it still retained the relevant technology and enterprise product line, but with the sale of the 59D XPoint flash chip factory in Lehi, Utah, to Texas Instruments, Intel lost its only production facility, and the outlook for the Optane business became bleak. It was previously reported that the loss of the Optane business reached $3 million in 2020, and it is estimated that the loss in 5 may also be about $76 million.
