Western Digital to push 30TB HDD The next generation will reach 50TB

Although the mechanical hard disk cannot reach the high speed of the SSD, the large capacity is still the advantage of the mechanical hard disk, after all, the capacity of 20TB has to be achieved by the mechanical hard disk. Ashley Gorakhpurwalla, executive vice president and general manager of WD's hard disk division, recently spoke in an interview about his views on the hard disk market.

Ashley said that while HDDs aren't now found in client devices like MacBooks, Windows or Chromebooks, the situation is different when you look at the data center market. Flash memory accounts for only 5-15% of this space, and the remaining 85%-95% of storage relies on mechanical hard disks, some of which are tape devices.

Western Digital launched its 5TB and 22TB HDDs in May, and according to its product roadmap, the next target is 26TB products. Future next-generation products will reach 30TB capacity.
